Sclerotherapy, A Fast, Relatively Painless Solution to Banish Spider Veins and Varicose Veins
Sclerotherapy is a great choice for finally getting rid of those unwanted varicose or spider veins that have become a cosmetic concern. Sclerotherapy treatment is one of the safest and most effective treatments available for treating varicose and spider veins. This relatively painless procedure involves the use of a chemical solution, called a sclerosant, injected directly into the vein in question using a very fine needle, causing the vein to collapse and forcing blood to reroute through healthier veins. Within a few weeks, the collapsed vein is reabsorbed into the body and fades from view. This doesn’t mean that new spider veins won’t form, but treated veins are gone for good. Sclerotherapy can work wonders to reduce the appearance of large, dark, or unsightly veins on the legs, arms, chest, or hands.
Spider Veins or Varicose Veins
Spider veins (also referred to as telangiectasias) are small, thin vein patterns that often appear red, blue, or purple in color. These veins are very common around the face and legs. Spider veins may cause discomfort or pain in some cases. Varicose veins are larger than spider veins. These veins may cause bulging and often appear blue or flesh-colored. Varicose veins primarily affect the legs and can cause throbbing, aching, and pain. Both types of veins develop when the valves and walls of the veins are weak, which causes blood to pool in the veins. This pooling increases the pressure in the veins, and they become enlarged, resulting in visible varicose or spider veins. Varicose and spider veins are very common. About 50 to 55 percent of women and 40 to 45 percent of men in the United States suffer from some type of vein problem. Varicose veins affect half of people 50 years and older. Many factors can raise your risk for developing varicose and spider veins, including family history, older age, female gender, pregnancy, obesity, prolonged standing or sitting, blood clots, and prior trauma. Depending on the number of veins treated, injections may take anywhere from five to twenty minutes with little to no downtime. A topical numbing cream can be applied to ease any discomfort that may occur during your vein removal procedure. Following treatment, compression stockings are used to make sure that the vein walls stay collapsed. The vein gradually dissolves over several weeks and ultimately disappears.
How many treatments?
Many patients will see significant improvement after the initial injection within 6-8 weeks. However, some patients will need two or three treatment sessions for optimal results.
